What is TAT ?

What is TAT ?

TAT – The Group Against Torture of Euskal Herria arose after several years of working and organising since 1992 as a Non Governmental Organisation, whose principal objective is the eradication of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading punishments or treatment. In doing so we hoped to involve and inform Basque society as a whole of this cruel reality. In addition to this objective TAT is committed to guaranteeing judicial, psychological and medical assistance to Basque citizens who have been victims of torture throughout these long years.

These are TAT's principal fields of work:

  • Collection and compiling of the accounts of torture made by those Basque citizens who have suffered it.

  • Publication of the accounts, with the consent of the victim, with the aim of educating society of this shameful reality.

  • Offering legal, psychological and medical assistance to the victims of torture who desire or need it.

  • Permanently denouncing the use of torture, in territorial institutions as well as in public denouncements to the media and to society.

  • Verification and denunciation of the use of torture to international bodies.

  • Proposing alternatives to society in order to advance towards teh eradication of torture.
  • We are aware of the importance of our work. A society that allows, hides and ignores the existence of torture is a sick society. Shamefully, the powers that are directly responsible for this practice try to sicken society further by hiding and silencing information on it through legal, jurisdictional and media mechanisms that they control.

Through this page we hope to overcome these barriers of silence and bring you the information. Information, opinions and reflections that are at our disposal. That is the commitment that we make. We hope that our work will be useful in the fight against the use of torture.
